NY Mayor Calls for Creative Energy Solutions

Author: Drink Deep
09.02.08

Mayor BloombergIn a recent speech at the 2008 National Clean Energy summit, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that the city is searching for innovative new methods of generating power for the city. Citing the strained power grid that left NYC dark in 2003, Bloomberg emphasized the need for the U.S. to be more proactive in building a strong and sustainable energy production infrastructure.

To guide NYC’s plan for a greener future, PlaNYC calls for energy conservation and investment in long term energy solutions. Bloomberg is currently seeking out creative solutions – perhaps hydroelectric, rooftop solar, offshore windfarms, or turbines on bridges will power the NYC of the future. He suggests that energy costs should include a green tax which would make clean energy comparatively affordable to old-school pollution-spewing options.

Creative energy solutions are something that we need across the U.S. We could all conserve energy by taking the bus more often or turning off the computer at night. For businesses, there’s a lot of wasted space on top of buildings that could be full of solar panels, or the expansive grassy lawn of many homes and businesses could include a small wind turbine. It’s time that we all put a little extra thought into how we can use our local green resources to provide the (hopefully reduced) energy that we need.

Pixie Maté to Fuel Local VC’s 50 by 50 Marathon Goal

Author: Drink Deep
07.19.08

Brad FeldPixie Maté is proud to announce that it will be sponsoring Brad Feld, Managing Director of the Foundry Group, in his effort to complete a marathon in each of our 50 states by his 50th birthday and support his goal to raise $100K for the Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis.

For those who don’t know Brad, he’s a long time staple of Boulder’s entrepreneurial community. As a cofounder of Foundry, and previously Mobius Venture Capital, he has provided many software companies the launching pad required to become successful. Last year, he helped found Techstars, a summer incubator program for fledging entrepreneurial ventures. He’s also a friend of the entrepreneurship program at CU’s Leeds School of Business, offering a helping hand to budding entrepreneurs. Brad has a popular blog of his own, Feld Thoughts, which covers a wide array of topics from techie to environmental. [I love the nerdiness of a recent math music video post].

All of us at Pixie Maté are glad that we can help support a goal that allows Brad to take a break from the technology age and get a little sunshine. Brad has until 12/1/2015 to finish his fiftieth marathon. Fortunately, he has already completed 11 to date and has 2 more scheduled this year. Still, he’s going to have to average more than 5 marathons per year for the next 7 years. Looks like were going to be seeing Brad in his running shorts quite a bit (alternatively, maybe he can get one of his fledgling software companies to hack a database and revise his birth certificate).

Get out and Tri!

Sweet Twisted TriSummer has hit and it’s time to get outside and get physical. As always, any activity is better when maté is involved!

This summer, Pixie Maté will be sponsors at the Red Licorice Events women-only series of athletic events, including the “cutest damn triathlon series in Texas.” These short, fast-paced tri’s are perfect for ladies who want to push themselves, but don’t want to suffer all day in the Texas summer sun. The first event, the Rogue Women’s Tri, will be held July 27th in New Braunfels (midway between Austin and San Antonio) and features a 300m swim, 11.1 mile ride, and a 2 mile run. To keep you focused through August, the Sweet & Twisted Triathlon will be held west of Austin on August 24th. You should be in better shape by then, so this tri includes a 500m swim, 15 mile ride, and 5K run. As extra motivation to finish, the events include post-race ice foot baths & mimosas (and don’t forget about the cold maté). You can also be a sporting fashionista during the event by purchasing a pink Skirt Sport (a Boulder company we love) running skirt during registration; the price is super low and $5 of each purchase is donated to GENaustin, an organization focused on building the confidence and courage of young girls.

An ice cold maté at the finish line – might just be enough to get me to learn to swim (ok, maybe I’ll stick to my bike and the cheering section)

Star Profile II - Theophylline

Author: Drink Deep

Theophylline cross-stitch It’s time for us to profile the most mild mannered but determined not to be forgotten member of the xanthine alkaloid sisterhood trio – Theophylline. She doesn’t play with the gods like sister Theobromine (profiled earlier) or leave you regretting your relationship later like sister Caffeine, but she is still an important factor in providing the beloved zing of yerba maté. Theophylline is much more down to earth, her name meaning “Of tea leaves.”

This lovely lady has spent many years with your beloved grandma, as she is the stimulant found in tea leaves. Theophylline in her synthetic form helps treat respiratory diseases such as asthma.

If you love this great gal, maybe you should stitch a lovely picture of her for Grandma next Christmas. Stitch in Style has the pattern you need.

Star Profile I - Theobromine

Theobromine TShirtOne of the greatest features of yerba maté is the balanced buzz that it provides without the nasty jitters or crash associated with coffee. That’s because maté’s energy boosting powers are not solely reliant on the wiles of lady Caffeine. Her xanthine alkaloid sisters, Theobromine and Theophylline, complement Caffeine’s stimulating powers.

Theobromine often takes her own starring role when working with chocolate. Her name means “having the nature of food from the gods”, named after Theobroma, the genus that includes cacao. Theobromine’s cocoa pairing has been an important role for centuries – from playing a role in ancient religious ceremonies to its aphrodisiac associations and vital role in romantic holidays.

If your love for Theobromine runs deep, you can get a cool t-shirt featuring this sexy gal in her elemental state at thinkgeek.com.

And remember as you sip maté to be thankful for the beautiful hum that Theobromine helps to inspire!

Welcome. Hey Hey Maté is a blog of solace from the company that brings you the cup of comfort. An attempt to capture the evolving culture of yerba maté from barista tales of what goes into the best maté latte to how the sacred sip of South America fuels people to the ends of the world (literally). Plus, some peripheral distractions that catch our fancy. Yes, Pixie Maté (Boulder, CO) is behind this operation...but when it comes down to it, Hey Hey Maté is just another way for 2 amigos to express more big love for the tea of the tree that sings the body electric.
