There is a special time for mate’ people. Morning! That first brew is nothing short of spectacular. Many of us have a routine. As for me, I work in software, so I start up the computers. Then, I turn on the burners and wait for the boiling screams from my tea kettle. The deep, rich mate’ blend smell that I’m fond of almost supplies me with the energy I need. However, I’m fond of the zing I get from a good cup of mate. I drink. I enjoy.
Miles Davis sums it up perfectly for me…
I’m always thinking about creating. My future starts when I wake up every morning… Every day I find something creative to do with my life.
Miles Davis
Miles had the “mate morning mind” where ideas and possibilities are fresh. The aroma of potential is all around a mate’ morning mind. BUT, do coffee drinkers have the same feeling? What’s more, how long does it take them to “get there” like we do with mate’? I set out to answer this question from a fellow coffee drinkers. What I found was a difference in the state between being awake and asleep. I call it the sleep/wake chasm.
Many of you have probably heard of the technology chasm. You know, the early adopters to the laggards; those that will adopt technology and the far behind. I’m sure you’ve met people in both classes. The early adopter installed the iPhone 2.0 software and knows how to use it thoroughly. The laggards still cling to bag phones. The chasm is the space between the early adopters and everyone else. The author Geoffrey Moore coined the term and it fits here too.
After speaking to my coffee friends, I’m convinced that mate’ drinkers cross the sleep/wake chasm earlier than coffee drinkers (see the chart). I asked a simple question: “when do you feel awake after drinking coffee?” Statements like these from my friends were not uncommon:
“I have to drink a whole pot to wake up, even after a good night’s sleep”
“I ‘feel’ awake about mid morning, even early afternoon”
“Dude, what other option do we have other than coffee” - ps: I think I turned this guy to mate’…
My theory is that mate’ freshens the mind with zing and creates the feeling of awake much more effectively than coffee. In other words, you can cross the sleep/wake chasm much quicker with mate’. Don’t believe me? Well interview your friends and post a comment on this blog and share…
We recently received an email from a consumer in Nebraska that is finding relief from the side-effects of chemotherapy (3x/wk) and radiation (2x/wk) in a Maté Latte. We had never heard this before, but decided to post the email just in case it may help others.
My name is Mary age 43. I live in LaVista, NE. I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in November 2006. I elected to take chemo injections (interferon) and radiation. I cannot tell you how wonderful the Maté Latte is for settling your stomach. I drink it every day. I encourage all chemotherapy patients to try this product. Please talk to your physician and encourage patients to try this. When I am having a particularly bad day I add a touch of cinnamon on top. Please keep yourself strong by drinking a Maté Latte. The antioxidants are superb. Cancer patients need that energy and stamina. This product helps calm your nerves and boosts your metabolism. In addition, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. This product has helped lower my blood pressure. It is heaven sent. Thanks so much.
This just in from Yerba Mate enthusiast and mountain biking fanatic, Walker Thompson. When not riding, Walker manages a great blog dedicated to mountain biking www.yourmtb.com
Hello mate’ lovers! I’m writing this from the road (and jacked up on mate’) so please excuse the excitement. I’m leaving Tucson, AZ having just finished the terribly terrific 24 Hours of Old Pueblo endurance mountain bike race. This is my fifth attempt at a 24-hour race and after five attempts, I learned a key secret to performance. What is my secret? Mate’ Limon. Imagine riding 16 miles surrounded by the most heinous cacti you’ve ever seen. One fall and you’re covered with NEEDLES! Then, imagine it is your 8th lap of the race and it is 2:00 am! Keep going with me here; you’re tired, cold and a bit testy. You finish your lap and to your surprise a hot cup of something is thrust in front of your face. What is in that cup? Mate’ Limon! Like I said, I’ve done five of these 24-hour gigs. I usually keep the Mate’ to the gourd to maximize the zing I get, but not this 24-hour race in the desert of Tucson. No, I realized I needed something with some light sweetness to kick start my next lap and then the next and the next… I just want to thank the guys at Pixie for making my race that nuch sweeter!

…it even appears on the road signs. This photo was taken on the side of what can only loosely be called a road in extremely rural Argentina. We were headed down to watch a sunset on the Rio Parana and couldn’t believe our eyes when we came upon this sign and another similar one. We considered it divine intervention and ended up naming our company, Pixie Maté, after what is clearly a pixie blowing her pixie dust on Maté leaves.
While the ‘my-energy-solution-is- cleaner-than-yours’ continues to build heat, we’ve decided to make at least an immediate choice by ‘going green’ at our Boulder offices with wind credit purchases from Renewable Choice. It costs a lot less than you think, and exempts us from guilt associated with fossil fuel burning. This year, you can purchase Wind Power Credits and give them as a gift card (www.renewablechoice.com/windpowercard). An individual card is only $5 (offsets 250 kWh) and a family card is $15 (offsets 750 kWh). Each card is designed to be the equivalent to one month worth of energy usage… and the family plan offsets what could have been 560 lbs of burnt coal. And you don’t even have to buy the turbine…
